- ColorMAGIC* INSTRUCTIONS:
- ABOUT ColorMAGIC*:
- ColorMAGIC* contains 600+ megabytes of drawings for business, education or
- fun.
- These 256-color images range in size from 1" to 4" and print at 300 DPI;
- suitable for 150-line screen (magazine quality). ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE TO
- VIEW 256-COLOR IMAGES ON A 16-COLOR MONITOR, A 256-COLOR MONITOR (OR BETTER)
- IS RECOMMENDED. ColorMAGIC* images print on any dot matrix printer or laser
- printer, but appear best on color printers. ROYALTY-FREE*(see below).
- You can print them in publications, newsletters, brochures or anything where
- you need color graphics to give that extra "punch".
- We've chosen these formats so that almost any program on the market can
- properly interpret the color information correctly. The images are provided
- in PC-TIFF format and Mac PICT format.
-
- IF YOU ENCOUNTER DIFFICULTY LOADING ANY IMAGE, CHANCES ARE THAT YOUR COMPUTER
- DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY (RAM) TO LOAD THAT PARTICULAR IMAGE. CHOOSE A
- SMALLER IMAGE OR INCREASE THE COMPUTER'S MEMORY (RAM).
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS for DOS, Windows 3.1, Macintosh:
- Sufficient memory is required to run your favorite program and also load
- an image from ColorMAGIC*. Most images require 500K to 1.4MB. 3 to 4MB ofRAM
- is suggested minimum when working with 8-bit color images at a resolution of
- 300 DPI or higher. An image of this resolution will require about 300K per
- square inch.
-
- FOR WINDOWS 3.1+:
- There is a MENU for Windows. From DOS, simply log onto the CD-ROM drive
- and type "WINGO". This will run the WINGO.BAT program located in the
- root directory on the ColorMAGIC* CD-ROM. The WINGO.BAT program will load
- windows and run the ColorMAGIC* Main Menu. The menu options are easy to
- understand. To bypass the MENU and go straight to PixMAGIC*, there are a few
- different ways:
-
- a. From DOS, log onto your CD-ROM drive by typing the drive letter, i.e.
- "g:"<Return>. Then type PIXMAGIC <Return> to load Windows and PixMAGIC* at
- the same time.
-
- b. From Windows, double-click on Windows' File Manager (the file
- cabinet icon in the MAIN Window that comes with Windows) and select your
- CD-ROM driveletter. Up will pop a window of all the directories on the
- ColorMAGIC* CD-ROM. If it doesn't do this, then insert the ColorMAGIC*
- CD-ROM into the drive. Click once on the LIBRARY directory in the left
- window, then click on the program PixMAGIC.EXE in the right window. Notice
- that PixMAGIC.EXE has a little green bar at the top, indicating an executable
- file. Note: The other executable files that you see in the directory are
- tied to the ColorMAGIC* MENU for DOS and Windows. The only one you need to
- know about is PixMAGIC.EXE. Experienced Windows users may write a small batch
- file or Windows PIF file for easy loading. Consult your Windows manual.
-
- The included PixMAGIC* Librarian software for Windows 3.1+ makes it easy to
- browse and find the "right" image in record time. Read further instructions
- on PixMAGIC's splash screen. After locating the image you want, quit PixMAGIC*
- and simply import the TIFF image into your favorite page design or desktop
- publishing program as usual. PixMAGIC* can also convert them easily into any
- popular format for any known desktop publishing or drawing program.
-
- After locating the image you want, usePixMAGIC* to "Save As" the image onto
- your hard disk. Simply import the converted image into your favorite page
- design or desktop publishing program as usual.
-
- For MS-DOS & PC-DOS:
- To use ColorMAGIC* images with your favorite desktop publishing program,
- simply import the TIFF image into your favorite page design, desktop
- publishing or word processing program as usual. Choose a TIFF image from any
- of the directories. There is a MENU for DOS users. Simply log onto the
- CD-ROM drive and type "GO" to run the DOS Menu. The menu options are easy to
- understand. The menu option entitled VIEW LIBRARY FROM DOS runs a slideshow
- of all the images on the ColorMAGIC* CD-ROM. The slideshow is in "regular
- VGA mode", 320 X 200 X 256 colors. It MAY or MAY NOT play the slideshow
- on your video monitor, depending on which video driver you have loaded under
- DOS. (Note: Windows uses it's own video drivers, so if you also have
- Windows, use our Windows librarian, PixMAGIC*, because it is more powerful
- and allows you to search by keyword as well as translate between popular
- graphics formats.)
-
- FOR AMIGA, UNIX OR OTHER COMPUTERS:
- Simply import the TIFF image into your favorite page design or desktop
- publishing program as usual.
-
- FOR MACINTOSH USERS:
- The Macintosh image librarian is called ImageCatalog. To view the image
- library, simply double-click on any of the .LIB library files in the LIBRARY
- Folder. After locating the image you want, quit ImageCatalog and simply
- import the PICT image into your favorite page design or desktop publishing
- program as usual. If you have sufficient memory, you can open all Libraries
- at the same time. Some programs, like PageMaker, QuarkXpress, etc. can also
- read the TIFF images formatted for PC-compatibles. Some programs even print
- the TIFF files better than the PICT files. If you have trouble viewing or
- printing the PICT files, then try the TIFF files. Some software does not
- read bitmapped Pict files correctly. The trouble is that they "assume" that
- a PICT file is vector graphics, which is not so in all cases. Also, some
- programs misinterpret the colors (256) and others misinterpret the resolution
- (300 DPI).
-
- HOW TO USE ColorMAGIC* IMAGES:
- This CD-ROM is addressable by PC-Compatibles, Macintosh, UNIX, Pro-DOS or any
- other computer with an ISO-9660 compatible CD-ROM drive (the industry
- standard). Library viewing software is provided for PC & Mac systems.
-
- The images print best on white paper with no colored background. They print
- as nice as on the cover of this product, depending on the type of printer
- being used. If your software or hardware doesn't print as nicely (without
- the jaggies), you might want to also try a different software program or a
- different printer.
- Some images would look better with frames around them. Also, some images
- have "cutouts" for use in newsletters etc., where words would be placed.
- It will look like the image was custom-designed for your publication.
-
- ColorMagic* images are "bitmapped" images, not "vector" images. They will
- print best at their actual size. If you need to reduce or enlarge the size
- of the artwork, adjust to the size you need. If it prints satisfactorily,
- then no problem. If you see moire' patterns (pronounced more-ay) in the
- artwork, then you might want to also test the image at 25%, 50% or 75% of
- it's original size. Any bitmapped image could have moire when resized; not
- just this product. Moire is a problem belonging to the PRINTER, not the
- ARTWORK.
-
- ColorMagic* images are intended for General Purpose use, meaning they are not
- intended specifically for use by high-end service bureaus, but for the rest
- of us. There are many different brands and types of printers on the market.
- Color printers will get better results than a black & white printer.

-
- PRINTING ADVICE:
- ColorMagic* images print at 300 DPI on printers capable of printing at 300DPI
- or better. If you have problems printing, chances are YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF
- APPLICATION MEMORY (RAM). Please add more RAM to your computer or printer.
- Each image was tested and printed successfully on various printers with
- different software. They were tested on Macs running System 6.07 and System
- 7, and on PCs running both DOS and Windows 3.1. We noticed that some
- software handles printing of color images better than others. If you're
- unhappy with your printouts, try using a different software program or a
- different printer.
